چکیده

Manganese (Mn) intoxication is known to induce parkinsonism. Mn-induced parkinsonism preferentially affect the globus pallidus in contrast to idiopathic parkinsonism where degeneration predominantly involves the nigral pars compacta. We describe a 51-year-old man who had been occupationally exposed to Mn. He had parkinsonian features including masked face, resting tremor, and bradykinesia. He also had a cock walk and a particular propensity to fall in a backward gait. There was no sustained therapeutic response to levodopa. A fluorodopa PET scan was normal. This case indicates that Mn-induced parkinsonism can be differentiated from idiopathic parkinsonism in that the former has unique clinical features and a normal fluorodopa PET scan.

Manganese toxicity with ephedrone abuse manifesting as parkinsonism: a case report

INTRODUCTION Neurologic consequences of manganese toxicity have been recognized since 1837. A new form of presumed manganese poisoning has been reported in drug-addicted persons from Eastern Europe and the Baltic states who have intravenously injected self-prepared methcathinone hydrochloride (ephedrone), which is synthesized from pseudoephedrine hydrochloride using potassium permanganate as a ...

Liver transplantation in a patient with rapid onset parkinsonism-dementia complex induced by manganism secondary to liver failure.

Bilateral and symmetric globus-pallidus hyperintensities are observed on T1-weighted MRI in most of the patients with chronic liver failure, due to manganese accumulation. We report a 53-year-old man, with rapid onset parkinsonism-dementia complex associated with accumulation of manganese in the brain, secondary to liver failure. A brain MRI was performed and a high signal on T1-weighted images...

Manganese induced parkinsonism: an outbreak due to an unrepaired ventilation control system in a ferromanganese smelter.

Several cases of parkinsonism were found in a ferromanganese smelter after the ventilation system had broken down and had not been repaired for eight months in 1985. To determine the aetiology and prevalence of parkinsonism, 132 workers were submitted to thorough medical examination and estimated air concentrations of carbon monoxide and manganese at different worksites. Only six of eight worke...

A case of manganese induced parkinsonism in hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia.

A 44 year old right handed woman complained of difficulty in moving. She and her relatives had skin telangiectasia or recurrent epistaxis. On neurological examination, she had a mask-like facies and bradykinesia in both extremities. Laboratory examinations showed iron deficiency anaemia and mild liver dysfunction with raised serum manganese. On T1 weighted cranial magnetic resonance imaging the...

Manganese and Parkinson’s Disease: A Critical Review and New Findings

The goal of this review was to examine whether chronic Mn exposure produces dopamine neuron degeneration and PD or whether it has a distinct neuropathology and clinical presentation. I reviewed available clinical, neuroimaging, and neuropathological studies in humans and nonhuman primates exposed to Mn or other human conditions that result in elevated brain Mn concentrations. Human and nonhuman...
